Free Money

So this exercise was pretty weird. For my class, we had to take 5, 1 dollar bills and hand them out to people in public. For this to occur, we had to develop a strategy. My strategy for this exercise is listed below:
  • Where will you go?
    • Checkers!
  • What kind of people will you approach?
    • I will approach anyone who is walking up to the Checkers. I designed a sign that says "do you like money?" so as to gain their interest. The people I assume who will take my money are hungry, curious people walking by or to the Checkers. There is also a large homeless population that hangs around Checkers so I think I'll be able to give out money fairly quickly.
  • What will you say to get the conversation started?
    • I will say "hi! Are you getting something to eat?"
  • What is your plan for the conversation?
    • After my initial question, I plan on saying "here's a dollar so you can get something extra with your food!" If they don't want the money, I'll just say "okay" and "enjoy your Checkers." If they ask me why I'm trying to give them a dollar, I'll say something like "I want you to be able to get that extra milkshake or fries that you may have written off b/c you didn't want to spend the money."
  • Out of five attempts, how many dollar bills do you think you will be able to give away?
    • I believe all of them.
Here's the resulting video:

Reflection:
At first, this was a lot harder than I realized. People kept giving the dollar back to me because they said they didn't need it. I also had to change locations because there wasn't a lot of people where I was. I ended up in front of the gas station and that's where I had the most success. Checkers was a bust.

Later, though, it was easier. I changed my tactic of telling people that I was giving them a dollar to buy food to telling them to keep the dollar so they can pass it on or do whatever they want with it. They were offended when I originally told them to go buy food with it. One guy even asked if he looked homeless and I had to do some quick back-peddling.

So my predictions for the assignment were definitely off. I had to change my location, my strategy, and it was a lot harder than I realized. At first, I assumed that anyone would take a dollar since it was just a dollar and this was suppose to be harmless. I thought people would love getting a dollar to get some food. Instead, they were offended.

In conclusion, this was a strange exercise that I enjoyed but also had some trouble with. It was fun giving money to people who enjoyed getting it. It was super weird when people were offended... selling things is hard!!!!

  1. Hey Cassandra!
I really enjoyed watching your video. I love how Dr. Pryor told us that it would be a lot harder than we would think and we didn't believe him. Well, he was right. I found your initial strategy to be really great, but I love even more that you adjusted the strategy as the project went on in order to fit your needs. I also found it interesting that there was such a wide range of reactions - some people who completely accepted it and some people who did not want to be a part of it. Great job! I was unable to complete this assignment, but I loved feeling like I participated in yours with such great video footage. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Hi Cassandra! I really enjoyed watching your video because i found it quite entertaining and humorous. Some of the other exercises that I watched from other students were just short clips of 5-8 seconds so it was nice to see you put in a lot of effort and keep the conversation going with the strangers even though it was probably really tough. I wish I did this exercise because it seems like something really fun and spontaneous but unfortunately I missed it. Good job though!

  3. Hi Cassandra,
I thought your video was pretty entertaining. I went through a bit of a roller coaster with the reactions, its unfortunate that in today's world we have to question people's generosity. You'd think anyone would love to get free money. I like that you changed your location to get the project done, it shows that you have dedication. I thought the guy at the gas station had a pretty cool reaction to accepting your dollar, at first he seemed a bit skeptical but then he ended up actually making conversation with you which I think is important when it comes to building relationships with customers once you establish a trust. Great job!

  4. Hey, Cassandra! Pretty brave of you to go to a lower-income area and endure the risk of people thinking you have a negative perception of them, as you said, you had to do some back-pedaling at one point. The sign was quite creative, and I think your rationale behind giving the dollar away was pretty sound.

  5. Hi Cassandra! I really enjoyed watching your video. You were pretty brave in going to an area with a gas station at night. That's something I would have avoided doing just because I'm paranoid. I really like your idea behind your reasoning for giving them a dollar, but I can see why some people might have been offended. I think your "passing on kindness" idea could have been a better approach in this respect. Over all, great post!

  6. Cassandra,

This is great! I couldn't have done what you were doing. I understand how you would have assumed giving away a dollar at a restaurant would be the easiest, but it ended up not working. I think if I was in the shoes of the other person I definitely would have accepted the dollar! lol Because I for sure don't get extra stuff because I feel bad about money. The gas station would seem like a good place because everyone feels really bad about spending on gas because the prices can be outrageous, so I could see why people would be more apt to accept money at a gas station! Great stuff!

  7. Hi Cassandra,

I think you had a pretty good idea when it came to going to a restaurant to give out the free money! Personally, I don't think I would have taken the dollar anyway but I wouldn't have found it offensive. Though I think the sign may have made an already awkward situation even more uncomfortable but also a bit funny depending on who you ran into. Very fun video to watch.

I didn't complete this assignment myself because but I'm glad I was able to see yours!

  9. Hi Cassandra. I have to say you had a great attitude through this! This was probably the hardest assignment we've had especially since you couldn't tell anyone why you were really trying to give them a dollar. You did great at fighting the urge to tell them why you were really doing it and kept a positive attitude. Good job!

  10. I enjoyed your post. Your video was very entertaining. I can certainly understand why certain people may find it offensive to be offered money, especially when the area is lower income. I like how you weren't discouraged and that you changed up your tactics to better hand out the money.

  11. Awesome video. This assignment seemed really difficult. I personally was out of town and didnt get it done but it looked like it was a challenge not telling people why you were giving them a dollar. Good job and entertaining video.

  12. Hello Cassandra,

Great post! Your video was very entertaining. You had a very great attitude. I can tell you put in a lot of effort and it's very interesting to see the different reactions of people, which is very reflective of the real world. It's nice that you switched it up and took the challenge of convincing people to take your money. I unfortunately did not complete this assignment because I did not have any money.

    Great job!

  13. I believe that the first indication to me that your video would have been different from the others that I was the fact that you decided to do yours in front of a Checkers immediately opens up a larger opportunity to give away free money to your potential "customers." This is something that I would have not thought of initially and an important detail that played an important role in your success.

  15. Hi Cassandra!

I absolutely love the way you approached this exercise! It looks like you really put yourself out there and just did it! That's a great attitude to have when it comes to Entrepreneurship. This exercise also teaches us how to create value for a consumer by coming up with a strategy to make them feel inclined to "buy" your product! Really great video!

  16. Hi Cassandra. Let me agree with you that this exercise “was a little strange”. I also struggled to find a good reason why give a dollar away, but I think yours with the checkers was not bad. I couldn’t help but notice the irony of the first guy who told you “I don’t need this I make a lot of money” while he was waiting for his order at Checkers; I believe he could use his abundant money a little better in food. You put a lot of effort and got some real interactions going with people. Great job overall.
